Description
If there was ever a more uniformly narrow deciduous tree it would be hard to compete with the likes of the sugar maple known as Monumentale. Also called Temple’s Upright.
Morphology
:
This is deciduous tree that can grow to 50’ in height but remarkably only spread to 3’. The star-shaped leaves are born on very short limbs, to say the least! The summer foliage is green and the fall foliage is the characteristic red, yellow, and orange as is common with other sugar maple cultivars. Note that the leaves are arranged in an opposite fashion.
Adaptation
:
Well adapted to most sites, other than those with alkaline soils. Full sun is required for optimum growth.
Pests
:
On the west Coast sugar maples do fine and on the west side of the Cascade Mountains. Leaf scorch can be a problem in drier, hotter sties.
