Description A Northwest native tree, which can also form a shrubby thicket.

  Morphology:
Leaves alternate, simple, broad, 2.5-5 cm long. White flowers give rise to reddish-purple to black, glossy 8-10 mm wide berries, which are sweet and succulent. Birds love the berries! The tree forms a long trunk with spreading limbs bearing very sharp thorns 0.8-2.5 cm long.

  Adaptation:
Black hawthorn prefers moist sites along streams and other full sun, open areas at lower elevations.
