Description Gardeners looking for a fast spreading evergreen ground cover with a plethora of red berries in the fall will greatly enjoy Eicholz cotoneaster.

  Morphology:
The evergreen groundcover features long spreading reddish branches bearing elliptic-ovate glossy dark green leaves that turn gold to orange-red color in the fall. Leaves are simple and arranged in an alternate fashion. One plant can spread up to 10’ across under ideal growing conditions. Roots form all along the spreading stems. Rarely do plants exceed more than 12” in height.

In the spring, non-showy white flowers form all along the stems. In the fall these flowers morph into quarter-inch red berries, which are carmine-red in color. Songbirds feast on these berries.

  Adaptation:
This plant prefers well-drained, acidic ground. This plant would make an excellent slope stabilizer or cover around the base of deciduous trees.

  Pests:
None reported.
