Description No hardy perennial can compete with the likes of the so-called Giant Rhubarb as Gunnera is called. Often found along side the edges of lakes or ponds where wet conditions prevail. Truly a conversation plant for the Northwest gardener!

  Morphology:
Gunnera is herbaceous perennial that can grow to a height of more 4’-6’ with large leaves (4’ across!). Leaves are conspicouously veined, with prominent lobes and cut edges. Leaves are borne on prickly stems. Flower stalks resemble corncobs and grow close to the roots, appearing beneath the leaves. Tiny red fruits are borne on the flowers.

  Adaptation:
Gunnera likes ample water (not soggy) and a rich organic site in order to thrive. Full to partial sun is ideal.

  Pests:
None reported.
