Description Sweet Briar rose is best known as an ancient rose from England whose single pink with white center flowers have a fragrant, apple scent

  Morphology:
Sweet Briar rose grows in the wild as a Northwest native plant, attaining a height and width of 8’. Leaves are arranged alternate and are deciduous. Leaves are odd-pinnate with 5-7 firm leaflets, with individual leaflets broadly elliptic and an inch in length. Leaf edges are serrated with gland-tipped teeth.

Flowers appear in small clusters, but typically in a singular fashion. The are borne on short, stout, glandular-bristly pedicels.

Hips are ovoid in shape and ripen to a bright red color in the fall.

  Adaptation:
This species grows well in either full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist sites.
