Description Japanese Umbrella pine is grown for its narrow, tidy growth habit and the presence of glossy dark green needles which cluster on the branch tips, resembling the spokes on an umbrella.

  Morphology:
As a native of southern Japan, umbrella pine is classified as a medium sized evergreen with large, 2" to 5" long linear leaves set in terminal whorls of 20 to 30. Back from the branch tips small scale-like leaves are distributed around the shoot. The tree is slow growing, but maintains a full even branching pattern over it entire life span. Older trees will set 2"- 4" long cones, 1"- 2" wide and chunky looking. Cones are green at first, but turn brown at maturity. The bark is an orange to reddish brown and is torn in long shreds.

  Adaptation:
Best suited to protected areas in acidic soils. It is tolerant of all levels of soil moisture.

  Pests:
None reported.
