Description This is an east coast native that is noted for its white fall flowers and chocolate colored foliage.

  Morphology:
This is an herbaceous perennial which grows to 3’ to 6’ high and about half as wide. Leaves are arranged in an opposite fashion along the burgundy-red stems. They have serrated edges. The foliage is purple to bronze in color.

Flowers are white and form a racem and appear in September-October. This plant is a favorite of the butterfly gardener. In addition, bees are attracted to the nectar of the flowers.

All plant parts are toxic.

  Adaptation:
This species prefers partial sun. It does best on damp sites with well drained soils.

  Pests:
Pest free in the Northwest.
