Description In the perennial garden the well known Astilbe is recognized by the tall feathery plumes it produces during the summer. An excellent choice for the woodland gardener. Also called False Spirea.

  Morphology:
This is an herbaceous perennial that grows to 3’ in height and 1’ wide. Basal leaves are ternately compound with sharply-toothed leaflets. Flowers appear from June through July. Under ideal conditions the gardener will enjoy striking pink, red or lavender flowering plumes (6” in length) held erect above the basal leaves. .

  Adaptation:
For best results select a site with shade in order to prolong the life of the flowers and the foliage. Astilbe does best if given constant moisture and regular fertilization. If placed in groups multiple Astilbe plants would make a wonderful groundcover.

  Pests:
None reported. The plants will naturally die back during the hot summer months.
