Description Scarlet Sentinel is a patented Red Maple cultivar from J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring Oregon. It has a noted upright form.

  Morphology:
This is a deciduous tree that grows to 40’ in height and 20’ in width. It has a branch habit which is fully upright. With time it develops an oval to rectangular form. It was developed as a cross between red maple (A. rubrum) and silver maple (A. saccharinum).

It has leaves which are more serrated than other red maple cultivars. They are also larger in size. During the summer they are dark green, before turning yellow orange to orange red in the fall.

Greenish yellow flowers form in April. On this cultivar they tend to be sparse.

  Adaptation:
With its narrow width this cultivar would make an excellent choice for the a parking lot planting strip or the boulevard street planting. Red Maples are best in full sun and can be considered drought tolerant once established. This cultivar has good heat tolerance.

Red maples can withstand wet soils very well.

  Pests:
No serious insect or disease problems.
