Description Japanese Aralia is a prized tropical shrub that features large glossy green leaves that will brighten up a shady Northwest garden.

  Morphology:
This is an evergreen shrub that can grow to 10’ in both height and width. It produces large, deeply lobed (7-11 lobes), glossy green leaves up 16 inches wide. They are born on woody stems that all emerge from a clump.

Flowers form in the fall. Umbels are filled with ¼-inch creamy-white flowers. Black fruit follows the flowers and ripens in late winter.

  Adaptation:
In areas west of Cascades plant thi plant prefers partial shade to full shade. In cooler sites it can take nealry full sun.

Winter injury occurs when the temperature drops to 10 F. Injured plants soon recover by mid summer. In colder areas this plant is grown as a houseplant.

As for soil type it prefers moist, acidic and highly organic soil.
