Description The cultivar Thunderhead Black Pine is a smaller variant of the common Japanese Black Pine.

  Morphology:
This is a small garden conifer that grows to 6’ at maturity with a spread of 11’. It is classified as a dwarf conifer by the American Conifer Society. It features a very erect growth habit though mature plants can spread out.

In spring ‘Thunderhead’ produces upright, silvery, new shoots, displayed like white candles against the dark foliage. In the traditional Japanese garden Black Pine is widely utilized.

  Morphology:
On the east coast Japanese Black Pine is commonly found near the ocean as it can tolerate warm temperatures and salt laden air. Select a site with full sun for best growth.
