Description Introduced by J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring Oregon, this zelkova cultivar is touted as being an excellent choice for use beneath power lines as it attains height of 24’ and a spread of 35’.

  Morphology:
As a broadleaf deciduous tree, wireless zelkova has simple alternate leaves, 2”-3” long and oblong-ovate in shape. The leaf margins are sharply serrated. Summer foliage is medium green but turns a very pleasing orange bronze fall color. Zelkova was once considered as a replacement for American elms as it features resistance to Dutch elm disease. However due to the considerably smaller stature for zelkova, most horticulturists still look for a larger tree species for parks and open planting sites.

  Adaptation:
Easily adapts to just about any site and soil condition. Often used in island plantings in parking lots as it can withstand high temperatures and yet still provide good shade for the cars beneath.

  Pests:
None reported.
