Description As a native of the mountains of central and southern Europe this pine species is grown all through the temperate zone as an easy care dwarfing conifer shrub that is hardy and inexpensive.

  Morphology:
Forms a dense, multi-trunked shrub with bright green needles (arranged in bundles of 2) which are 1.5" - 2.5" long and slightly curved. With time small cones (1" to 2" long) will be borne and appear as singles, or in clusters.

  Adaptation:
Does best in full sun, but will tolerate some partial shade. Prefers a moist, well-drained site, but will tolerate dry soils, as well as alkaline soil (high pH). Useful for rock gardens, mass plantings, and in groupings with broadleaf plants. To limit the height, clip new candle growth. Nurseries now carry cultivars of mugo pine that have been grown from cuttings as opposed to seeds, thus reducing the variability in the growth of plants.

  Pests:
None
