Description Japanese Cryptomeria comes in a number of different interesting cultivars. The one known as ‘Sekkan Sugi’ is often referred to as ‘Golden Curls’ as it bears bright yellow weeping curls at the ends of the branches.

  Morphology:
This is a garden conifer that will eventually grow to 30’ in height and 10’ in width. It forms an upright form with weeping branch tips. The awl shaped needles are arranged in a spiral fashion on the branches.

The new growth is light yellow for 3 months before it transitions to a dark green during the summer.

Cones do form on this Japanese Cedar. They are crinkled brown and hang from the ends of the branches in the fall. New cones will form in the winter months. .

  Adaptation:
Either full sun, or part shade will be fine for Sekkan Sugi, however you get the best color display in full sun.

  Pests:
None reported to be a problem in the Pacific Northwest.
